NBC News reports: “Blizzard of Ethics Complaints Filed Against Trump Administration by Public Citizen.”
NBC is reporting on 30 complaints we’ve just filed alleging 30 separate violations of Trump’s ethics executive order.
The order purportedly was the main means by which Trump was going to “drain the swamp” and keep government free of former lobbyists.
Trump’s ethics order prohibits lobbyists from entering government and working on issues they had worked on as lobbyists in the two years prior.
We found three dozen cases where former lobbyists now in the Trump administration appear to be violating that rule (in six of the 36 cases, the former lobbyists had received waivers).
And this is just the tip of the iceberg — so far, we’ve analyzed only about a quarter of the Trump appointees.
What does this mean in practice?
- A former lobbyist for for-profit colleges is helping make policy at the Department of Education;
- A former corn syrup industry lobbyist is helping set the United States Department of Agriculture dietary guidelines (she received a waiver to do so);
- A medical device industry lobbyist is serving as a senior adviser at the Department of Health and Human Services.
You get the picture.
Trump made an awfully big deal about how only he could fix the corruption in Washington, and his ethics executive order was the centerpiece of his plan to do that.
Now, it turns out, that ethics order isn’t worth the paper it’s written on — unless we hold the administration accountable.
Let’s keep the pressure on.
