This is a wake-up call for Maryland – and it’s time for all of us to pay attention to what’s happening in our public education system.
Complacency and inaction from the Hogan administration has gone on long enough. We can’t continue to allow Maryland’s leaders to hide their heads in the sand when it comes to our children’s future.
The fact is that under Governor Hogan’s watch, Maryland’s schools have dropped to fifth in nation after being ranked the country’s top system. This drop has been accentuated by a widening achievement gap – the eighth worst in the nation. If we want to ensure all of our children graduate ready to take the next step in their lives, then we must put forth the investment our young people deserve.
In Baltimore County, we’ve taken things into our own hands and decided to lead the way for our students. While the Hogan Administration has floundered on education, we’ve invested in enhancing the classroom experience for students and teachers alike. We’ve made a landmark commitment to school construction across our county to create modern learning environments for our students. Meanwhile, in classrooms, we are bringing laptops and tablets to our students, and keeping them connected to the technology they’ll need as they make their way out of the classroom and onto college campuses and careers.
We’re showing that these investments work, and it’s something that we need to expand to communities across Maryland.
Together, we can make sure we’re preparing our students with the skills they need to succeed in and out of the classroom.
